But it was not all so easy for me.
Let me share my story…
Like you, I thought working abroad is the only means to earn big money, so I could provide a better life to my family and a better future for my kids.
Though it was painful, I had to leave my kids back home, so I could work abroad.
Being away from my family was the hardest part of being an OFW. Some nights, I just cried myself to sleep.
Homesickness was silently breaking me.
As a parent, I wasn’t there when my daughters got sick.
I wasn’t there to cheer for them during their school performances.
I missed their birthdays, their small wins, their milestones.
And worst of all, I wasn’t there during the times they needed a parent the most.
One night, I got a call from my mother. She said my 6-year-old daughter did something bad in school.
I was working abroad to give them a better life… but at that moment, I asked myself,
“Can I really give them a better future if I’m never present?”
Tears rolled down my cheeks.
My daughter didn’t need more money.
She needed me.
I wanted to pack my bags and take the first flight back to the Philippines.
I left my youngest daughter when she was just 6 months old — and I still regret that decision.
When I finally came home for a short 30-day vacation after more than 2 years, she didn’t know me.
At just 3 years old, she loved her nanny more than me. That broke me. I wanted to stay. I wanted to go home for good.
But I couldn’t. I had zero savings. I had credit card debts. My only source of income was my job in Abu Dhabi. So, I went back.
I tried different opportunities to escape the OFW but I failed several times, but I did not give up.
Until one day in June 2013, I discovered the possibility of working from home — building a virtual career.
From then on, I spent my days working 8am-5pm in my corporate job in Abu Dhabi… and my nights — from after dinner until midnight (sometimes 2am) — learning, researching, applying. Even weekends, after video calls with my kids, I worked on my dream.
But it wasn’t a smooth ride.
Before I landed my first client… I faced more than 50 rejections.
Yes, 50+. Rejections left and right. No replies. No interviews. No “yes.”
There were moments I doubted myself. Maybe I’m not good enough. Maybe this isn’t for me.
But I kept showing up anyway.
Because I knew — every rejection wasn’t a “no.” It was just a “not yet.”
I reminded myself: “I am not starting from zero. I am starting from experience.”
And then, finally — after five long months of rejection and resilience — in November 2013, I landed my first virtual client from the US. I built and managed her websites.
I kept going. I kept learning.
And in December 2013, God answered my prayers.
I was hired full-time as a Virtual Operations/Project Manager by an executive coach based in the Netherlands.
That was the beginning of a whole new life.
After a lot of reflection and prayers, January 2014 when me and my husband decided to submit our resignation letters to our employers in Abu Dhabi.
After a two-month endorsement period, April 2014 when we finally said goodbye to Abu Dhabi and went home for good.
Since then, working virtually from home as Virtual Project Manager for foreign clients has become our bread and butter.
I have been managing executive coaching projects for executive leaders of start-up to Fortune 500 companies.
I still had a decent paying professional career even though I was working from home!
